The Missing Star
A cloud-top adventure
A cloud-top adventure

Ting-ting! Every morning, Lila rang the little bell by her door and listened to its music drift across the sky. “Quick as a cloud!” she called, skipping after the sound.

Tilt rolled up with his toolbox. “Let's try a louder tap!” he said, but his tiny hammer made a squeak instead. Lila grinned. “Did you hear that, Mia?”

The chime fell silent. Through her telescope, Lila spotted an empty star-shaped space in the great spinner on the summit. “Our song needs that star!” she said, and pointed to the rainbow bridge.

Lila scampered onto the rainbow bridge, with Tilt pushing his toolbox behind her. “We'll find that star!” she called. Then she stopped short: one bridge plank was missing.

“Let's try my folding plank,” said Tilt. He pulled it from his toolbox, but it sprang open with a boing and nudged his goggles sideways. Lila giggled, then held one end steady.

Together they fitted the plank into the gap. Lila took the first careful step, even though her tail trembled. “Quick as a cloud,” she whispered, and Tilt rolled the toolbox after her.

At the windmills, a gate opened onto the island path. Lila slipped through, but Tilt's toolbox stuck fast. “Let's try pushing!” he said. The box didn't budge.

Lila tugged the box. Clunk! “Oops. Pulling won't help either,” she said. Tilt tapped two catches on the sides. “Let's try taking it apart!”

Click, click! Tilt opened the catches, and Lila carried one half through while he carried the other. “Good thinking, Tilt! Did you hear those clicks, Mia?” Beyond the gate, something star-shaped flashed on the island.

Lila hurried along the path and pointed. “There's our star from the sky!” Tilt lifted its trailing string. “Let's try calling it a kite.” Lila blinked. “I was chasing a kite all along?”

“I got it wrong,” Lila said with a grin. “A kite can be a star too!” She tugged its string, but the kite stayed pinned under a hoop. The cloud meadow wobbled under her paws.

Lila stepped back onto the firm path. “That wobble makes my knees feel funny.” Tilt opened the toolbox. “Let's try our plank again, and those catches on the hoop!”

Tilt held the plank steady across the soft cloud. Lila took a careful step, then opened the hoop's catches: click, click! Together they lifted the kite, and a breeze tugged it toward the summit stairs.

At the summit, the empty spinner waited above a low cloud step. The breeze fluttered the kite, and Lila's paws hesitated. “I'll climb up,” she said. “Tilt, will you hold the string?”

“Let's try together!” said Tilt, holding the string still. Lila climbed the low step and fitted the kite into the star-shaped space. Click! The spinner turned, and a clear ding-ding rang across the clouds.

“Quick as a cloud—home!” cried Lila. She and Tilt sat side by side and slid down the broad, gentle cloud slide from the summit. Ding-ding! Their own chime answered as they reached the doorstep.

Tilt took out his tiny hammer. “Let's try that tap again!” Squeak! Lila laughed and tied a little star-shaped kite beside the chime.

Ding-ding, squeak! Now Lila and Tilt made their morning song together, with a little kite dancing beside the door. “For you too, Mia,” Lila said. “Quick as a cloud—and squeaky as a hammer!”
