Why children love being the hero of their own story

Ask a four-year-old what happens in their favourite story and, sooner or later, they will put themselves in it. They are the one who finds the treasure. They are the one the dragon listens to. Children are the hero of their own story long before anyone writes it down, and a personalised book simply takes them at their word.

This article looks at why that works so well, what a child gets from it, and how a personalised book is made with AI-Koma Kids, without a photo of the child, without a profile, and with the first book free.

Hearing your own name in a story

The first thing that happens when a child hears their name in a book is that they stop fidgeting. Suddenly the story is about them, and everything in it matters a little more. The brave decision is theirs. The friend is their friend. The happy ending happened to them.

For a young child, this is not a gimmick. It is how they understand stories anyway. Making it explicit just removes a step.

Choosing is half the pleasure

A personalised book is more than a name swapped into a template. What children love most, in our experience, is the choosing. Which hero: the brave bear, the cheeky fox, the little dragon, the adventurous robot? Which companion? Which world: the enchanted forest, the frozen sea, the jungle, space, the kingdom of the clouds? Which adventure: a treasure hunt, a great race, a surprise party, a journey?

In AI-Koma Kids, every choice is a picture, so a child who cannot read yet can still decide everything. There is no free-text box and no chatbot: the child taps, the parent can add a first name and a value to pass on, and the story is written and illustrated page by page from those choices. Two books made with the same choices do not tell the same story, because the twist is drawn at random.

What a child gets from being the hero

  • A reason to read. A story they chose, with their name in it, is a story they want to finish. For early readers this is a real help, and our article on a love of reading goes further.
  • A safe way to try on courage, kindness or patience. In the story, they are the one who shares, who keeps going, who says sorry.
  • A sense of being seen. The book is theirs: on the shelf, on the tablet, printed and sent to Granny.
  • A story that can carry something you want to say. Choosing “courage” or “friendship” as the value lets a book say gently what a lecture would not.

Our article on emotions and stories looks at the last point in more detail.

What the book looks like

Each AI-Koma Kids book has 16 pages for 3-to-5-year-olds, 18 for 6-to-8-year-olds and 20 for 9-to-12-year-olds, so that the length, the vocabulary and the suspense match the age. Every page is illustrated. The book is ready in a few minutes, can be read on a tablet, phone or computer in a reader designed for little hands, and can be downloaded as a PDF to print.

If your child wants, a voice generated by artificial intelligence reads each page aloud, with soft sound effects to match the scene, and waits for them to turn the page. And if they have a favourite cuddly toy, you can photograph it, on its own, never the child, and it becomes a character who comes back in every book.

What we chose not to do

Many personalised books ask for a photo of the child. We chose the opposite: no photo, no date of birth, no profile. The child recognises themselves in the adventure, not in a portrait. The books stay private, there are no adverts, and every book says clearly that its text, pictures and voice were generated by artificial intelligence. Every story goes through child-appropriate moderation before it is illustrated.

Books are available in six languages: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and German.

Frequently asked questions

Does my child have to be in the story by name?

No. The first name is optional. Without it, the child still chooses the hero, companions, world and adventure, and the story is built from those.

Can the hero look like my child?

The heroes are original characters, animals and young adventurers drawn for AI-Koma Kids, not portraits. We do not use photos of children. The child identifies with the hero through the choices and the name, not through a likeness.

How long does it take to make a book?

Choosing takes a few minutes, often longer because it is fun. The story and illustrations are then created in a few minutes, and the book waits in your library.

Is the first book really free?

Yes, the first book is free when you sign up. After that, a no-commitment subscription gives you 5 books a month for €5.99 or 10 for €9.99, with extra books at €1.99 for subscribers.
